After the video made by a 28-year-old drug addict from Mirik went viral on social media, the local people, educational institutes, governmental and non-governmental organizations raised strong objection and demanded immediate intervention of the administration to eradicate the drugs menace in the region.

The video which was made after the youth was recently arrested for drug possession, revealed several shocking details about the deeply rooted drug nexus in the region. The youth is heard candidly accusing the powerful and influential people, including some from police administration of being connected in the racket.

Darjeeling MP Raju Bista also spoke on the issue and stated that he has received multiple representations from the people and organizations of the Mirik region, who have alleged that “individuals related to politicians and some law enforcement officials are involved in sheltering drug traffickers and are actively engaged in protecting them.”

“I also informed them of the apprehension on the part of the locals that police may not be able to conduct a fair investigations into drug trafficking in the region due to political pressure,” Bista added.

Considering the grave situation, the MP on Wednesday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging his intervention in getting the Narcotics Control Bureau to conduct a ‘thorough and impartial investigation into the network of Drugs Trafficking in Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region.’

He further conveyed the matter to West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, bringing to his attention the ongoing agitation by the people of Mirik sub-division, who are demanding the arrest of Drugs Trafficking Kingpins.

As the people from Mirik are requesting for investigation by Central Agencies into the drug trafficking issue in the region, MP Raju Bista requested the Governor and Home Minister for their kind intervention in getting the Narcotics Control Bureau, which is a Central Agency, to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the network of drugs trafficking in Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region.
