Gajoldoba, 16th May: Panic gripped the residents of Takimari in Gajoldoba after a herd of around 30 wild elephants entered the area late Thursday night and remained there through Friday, camping in local crop fields.

According to reports, the elephants caused widespread damage in areas including Biren Basti and Dhupguri Basti, destroying crops such as maize, cucumber, pumpkin, and fruits. Locals reported waking up Friday morning to the sight of the massive herd, which had entered the area overnight. Despite ongoing efforts throughout the day, forest officials have not yet been able to drive the elephants back into the forest.

The situation has intensified fears among residents, especially as the memory of a recent fatal elephant attack remains fresh. Just two days ago, a person was killed by an elephant at Khatkhatia Ghat in the same Takimari region. When forest personnel and the range officer arrived on the scene back then, they were met with strong anger from the local community.

In response to the latest intrusion, Rajganj MLA Khageswar Roy and Gajoldoba Outpost OC Hirukanti Sarkar reached the affected area to assess the situation. The Forest Department continues to work on safely pushing the elephants back to their natural habitat.
