Siliguri, 15th June: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation on Monday, acting on a complaint filed by NBSTC and following directions from the High Court, carried out a demolition drive against an allegedly unauthorized construction near the NBSTC bus depot under the jurisdiction of Pradhan Nagar police station.

According to sources, NBSTC had alleged that nearly one foot of its land had been encroached upon during the construction of a three-storey building and that an illegal structure had been raised on the disputed portion. The matter remained under litigation for a prolonged period.

Reports stated that around three months ago, the municipal corporation had issued a notice to the building owner directing the removal of the unauthorised portion. However, after no action was taken, a municipal team arrived at the site on Monday morning with machinery and demolition equipment and removed a section of the structure measuring approximately six feet.

The building owner claimed that the disputed portion involved only one foot of land and alleged that the wall in question had already been demolished following the original complaint. He further alleged that despite this, NBSTC continued to pursue the matter and that the municipal corporation carried out the demolition without prior intimation.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the action, the owner claimed that while the complaint concerned one foot of land, the demolition was carried out over a six-foot section of the building. He criticised the municipal corporation’s action taken on the basis of the NBSTC complaint.
